Dr. Gary Grandison | Head Coach

Completing his 10th season as the head of the program in which he competed in, Dr. Gary Grandison has elevated and transformed the Alabama State golf programs into the gold standard in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

Dr. Grandison, an 11-time SWAC Coach of the Year, inherited a men’s golf program that was on academic probation with an APR below 800 and immediately transformed the program into one of the top men’s academic programs in the SWAC with team GPA’s often above 3.5.  The men’s golf program has won the past six SWAC Championships to go along with two national championships.

Dr. Grandison inherited a fledgling women’s program and transformed the program into a perennial contender that has won the past five of seven SWAC Championships while maintaining a perfect 1000 APR during most of his tenure.  The NCAA has twice provided special recognition to the women’s golf program for its APR performance.

Under Dr. Grandison’s guidance, the golf programs have earned 12 NCAA Regional appearances, received multiple Academic All-America awards and developed multiple professional golfers.

Dr. Grandison earned a bachelor of science degree in finance from Alabama State University, the same year he served as the golf team’s captain and won the G.H. Lockhart Award for the most outstanding student athlete.  He also obtained an MSS degree and DSM degree from the United States Sports Academy.  Before his coaching tenure begun, Dr. Grandison served in academia as an assistant professor and an interim chairperson.
